Safety & standards

Built around the river, not imposed on it.

Swim London only operates as an organised, permission-led event. Safety planning, water-quality awareness and clear go/no-go criteria sit behind every decision we make.

Permissions led

We work in step with the Port of London Authority and river stakeholders. Event Management Plan, RAMS, insurance and risk assessments are central to the build.

Professional swim safety

A professional swim safety lead and experienced operations team underwrite the on-water plan. Tow floats are expected to be required.

Water-quality aware

Water-quality monitoring informs our go/no-go decisions. We will be honest with participants if conditions change.

Weather contingency

The event has clear postponement, amendment and abandonment protocols, signed off by our operator and swim safety lead.

Our approach in plain English

  • • We do not encourage unsupported individual swimming in the tidal Thames.
  • • Swim London is an organised event with permissions, safety planning and water-quality checks.
  • • Entry standards exist for a reason — they protect participants and the operation as a whole.
  • • If conditions are not right on the day, we will say so.

A cleaner-river mission

We believe London should have cleaner, safer, more accessible urban waterways. Swim London helps champion that future through responsible events, education, partnerships and water-quality awareness — not through bravado or wild-swimming language.
